Vassmar makes the A-main with the New Schumacher Mi6 at ETS

This weekend the 3rd round of the ETS 2015/2016 series was held in Wels, Austria. The indoor track had high traction and the layout was mixed but overall quite fast and flowing. The new Mi6 worked really good right from the start for Magnus Vassmar and he was P7 after the first round of practice. After some setup changes in the wrong direction for the second practice,  he was P21 for the qualies.

With new changes again for Q1 he was again P7 in the round. The car was super easy to drive and had good pace over 5 minutes. For the remaining qualiers, he tested various setup changes as the base setup worked really well. He secured P10 for the A-main with P7/Q1 and P8/Q2 as counting rounds. Michal Orlowski had pace for the A-main as well but after some bad luck he found himself at P16 after the qualies. Elliot Harper had a difficult day of qualifying and was P21 at the end of the day.

For the A-Main, Magnus tested various setup changes and the car had good pace in all the finals to race with the mid field of the final. After some good starts from the back of the grid together with some tight battles he finished the race at P7.

Magnus set up can be found here.

Martin Hofer Discusses Chassis Building

We found this article a few years ago written by Martin Hofer concerning the Schumacher Mi5 and details the difference in a car (or buggy) that's just built versus one that's built well.. We've taken and paraphrased the important bits for you below. The ideas and methodology presented here apply equally to any surface vehicle you may own and run.

The original article can be found here: Martin Hofer: The importance of 5P

".. When I first started to do this hobby my cars were like most other’s; they were built … and sort of holding together.

But there is a HUGE difference between a car that is built and a car that is built well.

Not only by the effort you put into the building process but also on track. With a well built car, you will find that you never really suffer from setup issues! It simply works. Everywhere, in every situation, on any tire. My cars (may it have been Mi4, Mi5 or previous ones) were always good right away. This is important as it enables you to focus on your line, the track, tires and tire prep, power package. The list goes on and on.

So what is the difference between a good and a better car, even if the setup might be the same one?

First of all: Binding

Everything NEEDS to move freely. A binding suspension never works. An arm reamer is therefore mandatory. You just need one.

Second but not least important: Slop

Slop, and this I have tested on multiple cars, reduces grip, precision and ultimately corner speed. It also softens the car’s reaction (might make it easier to driver but at the end of the day also slower). But let’s not get carried away. To let you get the maximum out of your car,  here is what I do, when building a new kit / or rebuild my car ahead of / at races:

When I build my shocks, I always run (the appropriate) drill through the piston holes just to ensure they are (all) perfect in size. I then -> glue the piston to the shaft. Since the shaft is (usually) Ti-Nitrid you can still easily remove the piston if you really need to. With no glue, you will have slop either right away or with time. It might not be much in the shock itself but on the wheel it can be something like 1mm undamped movement -> why use dampers anyway then? You could also use a shim to take the slop out, but I prefer the gluing method as it also reduces the load on the E-clips

As there is no relative movement between hub and pivot pin anymore, you need to ream the holes in the wishbone itself to ensure, the hubs are falling under their own weight.

It takes time but only once, so I classify it as: worth it!

Still on topic: camber links

(When new) the ballcups fit nicely onto the ballstuds. ( However, over time ) when slop occurs, there is an easy way to get rid of it (which again is something I have done to pretty much any car I have ever built like Tamiya, HB, Yokomo, Xray … you name it).

Always take your time with sway bars. they need to be slop free and fall under their own weight. When you have achieved that, you can make sure it’s neutral -> every side lifts off at the same height added to the other side (shocks disconnected, car flat on setup board, droop gauge placed underneath the wishbone (where you measure droop)).

A long to do list. But I promise it’s worth it. Some things might really impact your outright pace, others may be more noticeable in track-to-track-performance. "

Awesome insight Martin.. Thank you for sharing ..!

Double Deck Astro Offroad Track

Found this video layout on one of our friends pages and thought it worthy of sharing. It's originally from TLR Austria's Facebook page. I absolutely love the upper deck as well as the drop off. Also interesting how careful you'd need to be on the upper deck so as to not fly right off into the ceiling..! Part way through, you'll see a marshal on the right working the topside pretty efficiently.

Enjoy ..!

dRC to Sponsor 2016 ROAR Nationals

The ROAR Nationals is one of the most  sought after and prestigious RC car events conducted in the United States and Canada. They are the ‘center stage’ for drivers from across North America to come together and vie for the title of ROAR National Champion.

Running this year at Valkaria RC; they are a relatively young track located in Valkaria, Florida. They have many years of combined experience, planning, organizing, and racing events.  This track is unique - from the variety of events that they hosted to the volunteers that help make each event successful.

dRC podiums at 2016 King of the Road Race

The annual King of the Road Race was held last weekend at Michiana RC Raceway and always brings out some good local talent. This year was no exception.

After three rounds of tight 17.5 Stock TC qualifying on the small 60'x 36' track, the grid was set for the A main:

  1. Mike Wise - Serpent USA - 46/6:02.091
  2. Brad Mergy - RC America - XRAY T4'16 - 46/6:05.548
  3. Zac Doanthen - - XRAY T4'16 - 46/6.05.708
  4. Phil Vertrees - - XRAY T4'16 - 45/6.01.464
  5. Adam Bucholtz - Serpent USA - 41/6.05.786

The Main started fast and rough as it took several laps to settle in; although not before claiming the spur gear of dRC's Zac Donathen on lap 23, fully taking him out of contention. In the end, RCA's Brad Mergy would claim victory on the day with his XRAY T4'16 at a pace of 46/6:07.345.

  1. Brad Mergy - RC America
  2. Mike Wise - Serpent USA
  3. Phil Vertrees -
  4. Adam Bucholtz - Serpent USA
  5. Zac Donathen - - DNF #serpentUSA #RCAmerica #XRAY #MRCR

Attitude and the tracks we race at ..

Greg Vogel of RC Driver Magazine writes a compelling article regarding the seemingly ever devolving attitude we drivers  have about the tracks we race at. This particular article talks about the dirt scene - however in my experience, the same exists for the on road scene as well - " I don't like the carpet", "I hate dots", " This layout sucks .."  It goes on and on and on .. Greg makes a solid point when he writes:

" Offer to help. After all, last time (I) checked no state is overrun with tracks and we don’t have too many to choose from so help keep them around.   .. "

We couldn't agree more .. Read the full article at the link below:

Schumacher CAT 98 Driveshaft Conversion

A good friend of the shop had an issue matching some of the currently available Schumacher drive shaft parts to his older, and now Vintage, Schumacher CAT 98. After much time and painstaking research, he's developed a good solution and fix for just that. Find the full write up (with pix and exploded diagrams) at the link below.
